about

Happy to finally release this! This song is a journey and is definitely the most complex thing I’ve ever written. If you don’t like one part, just wait for the next change. I even had my daughter play clarinet!
There are well over 100 tracks, multiple time signature and tempo changes, and even a key change. It’s a total bear of a song and proved to be a challenge for many involved but everyone persevered and made it happen. I wrote it back in 2017, recorded it in 2020, and just recently finished it up with the help of some amazing people around the globe. Many of them, including myself, probably thought we’d never finish. I would have never dreamed that I’d have the opportunity to work with this level of talent. A huge “Thank you!” to each and everyone involved.

lyrics

Walking in line
you follow in time.
You’re wasting away.
The harder you try,
the harder you die.
You’re wasting away.
How does it feel
to be wasted?
How does it feel
to be gone?
The further you go,
the less you know.
You’re wasting away.
No fire in your eyes.
It’s no surprise.
You’re wasting away.
How does it feel
to be wasted?
How does it feel
to be gone?
You turn around
to face it all head-on.
You turn around
to face it all head-on.
Hold on
to me again.
Try to forget
and be free again.
Lift up your hands
and show your worth.
You can’t understand
the cost of being first.
Ahhhhhh
Ahhhhhh
Ahhhhhh
Ahhhhhh
Forgetting the past,
a life that won’t last.
You’re wasting away.

Chris Taylor – Chris plays bass for one of my favorite bands, Grizzly Bear, and has worked with or produced many other bands (Grizzly Bear, Twin Shadow, Dirty Projectors, Moses Sumney, Morning Benders, Solange, Aaron Parks, Slow Hollows, and more). He was such a nice guy and a pleasure to work with. For this song Chris put on his engineering hat to record Kyle’s drums and percussion.

Kyle Crane – Kyle was so amazing throughout the process. The depth of his ability on drums and percussion is crazy, considering he’s still so young. He’s worked with some amazing musicians (Daniel Lanois, Rhye, Kurt Vile, Neko Case, Brad Meldau, Elle King, Blake Mills, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Madison Cunningham, Peter Bjorn and John, and more. He was even a drum double in the movie, Whiplash). His percussion really made the track come alive and gave it depth.

Roberto Soave – Based in London, England, Bob is a veteran bass player that has played in many of the bands that I admired and grew up with. (The Cure, Dogtablet, Presence, Shelleyan Orphan, The Western Approaches). Prior to his recording, the track was missing something. He did an amazing job filling that void and rounding out the bottom end.

James Reyna – James is a dear old friend. We met when I was in high school and have collaborated on various things over the years. At any given time, he has numerous projects going on (Melodywhore, Venus McVee & Notorious Erich Von P, Collapse of Dawn, Corpsegrindr). On this track, he did all the final mixing and mastering. He also added strings, additional synths and other magic. Huge thanks to him for his patience on this beast, it wouldn’t be what it is without him.

Luella Palmer – Lulu is my daughter. It was so much fun to have her play her clarinet on this song. She has played in her school band for a few years. I originally had synthetic clarinets but her real ones blew them away. She really impressed me and I’m so proud of her.

Kevin Palmer – I’ve been writing music as long as I can remember and played various instruments by ear at an early age. I eventually went to school for music but started thinking too much about theory and lost my natural ear for it. I took a break for nearly 20 years. About 10 years ago we bought a piano and it sparked my interest again. It’s never too late to make art or do what you love. On this track, I did the vocals, guitars, Mellotron, horns and other synths.
